Police said a man entered the store, threatened a person with a black semiautomatic handgun, and demanded the safe and items from the display case. He then racked the firearm and tried to pull the trigger, but it appeared to malfunction and ejected two live rounds.

After smashing a glass countertop with his right hand, the suspect ran out the door, got into a waiting vehicle at Hancock Avenue and left the area, police said.

On Tuesday, detectives served search warrants in Redwood City and Menlo Park after identifying a possible suspect. The suspect was arrested at one of the sites and booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of attempted robbery, possession of a stolen firearm, brandishing a firearm and burglary.

Police said a stolen Sig Sauer pistol was found at the suspect’s home and a “ghost gun,” or a firearm with no serial number, was found in the carport of a second residence.
